Severe Weather Activation Anticipated Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016

Central Carolina SKYWARN anticipates activation on the 146.88 repeater Wednesday, February 24, at the issuance of a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch or warning.
 
SKYWARN will be looking for the following types of spotter reports:
 
  • Hail – any size initially; then penny size, ¾” diameter or larger thereafter
  • Measured wind speeds of 50 mph or greater
  • Flooding and flash flooding where none normally occurs
  • Rotating wall clouds, funnel clouds, or tornadoes
  • Damage caused by high winds such as downed limbs and trees and their approximate diameter and building and roof damage.
Spotter reports are always needed when severe weather is occurring.
 
Spotters may make reports via:
 
  • the Central Carolina SKWYARN net on the 146.88 repeater
  • the Central Carolina SKYWARN Facebook page
  • the Raleigh National Weather Facebook page
  • the confidential Raleigh NWS telephone number given to spotters during training

WINTER WEATHER ACTIVATION – MONDAY, FEB. 15, 2016

Central Carolina SKYWARN  (CCS) will activate for this event per the direction of the Raleigh National Weather Service.  We will activate on the 146.88 repeater beginning at 6:00 AM on Monday and conduct formal nets at the top of each hour until the National Weather Service directs us to stand down.  We will monitor in between nets for any changeovers in precipitation.

Spotter reports should include the following information:

  • Name and callsign
  • Location and nearest cross street
  • Precipitation type (rain, freezing rain, sleet, or snow)
  • Intensity of precipitation (light, moderate or heavy)
  • Changeovers in precipitation and time
  • Accumulation of snow and ice accretion
  • Impacts such as road conditions (particularly any roads that are impassable or closed), sustained power outages (not just blinking), and downed limbs/trees from ice.

Folks may make reports via the SKYWARN net, or post here on the Central Carolina SKYWARN Facebook page.

The SKYWARN Net may also be monitored via live-streamed audio at www.broadcastify.com .

Winter Weather Activation Friday, February 12, 2016

Central Carolina SKYWARN  (CCS) will activate for this event per the direction of the Raleigh National Weather service.  We will activate on the 146.88 when precipitation moves into the Central Carolina SKYWARN coverage area on Friday and conduct formal nets at the top of each hour  until approximately 6pm. We will monitor in between nets for any changeovers in precipitation.

Spotter reports should include the following information:

  • Name and call sign
  • Location and nearest cross street
  • Precipitation type (rain, freezing rain, sleet, or snow)
  • Intensity of precipitation (light, moderate or heavy)
  • Changeovers in precipitation and time
  • Accumulation of snow and ice accretion
  • Impacts such as road conditions (particularly any roads that are impassable or closed), sustained power outages (not just blinking), and downed limbs/trees from ice.

Our backup repeater will be the 147.105 repeater with a tone of 82.5 Hz located in Broadway, NC.
